Residents in the community are receiving phone calls for solicitation and a request for payment from a telephone number that is showing up on their caller ID as being from Mount St. Mary's Hospital. These calls are fraudulent. The hospital telephone numbers have been "spoofed."

The Niagara County Department of Health Nursing Division, in partnership with the Niagara County Office for the Aging, is offering a free diabetes self-management workshop. The six-week workshop series begins Friday, Oct. 27, and runs from 9-11 a.m. at the Dale Association, 33 Ontario St., Lockport.

On Saturday, Nov. 4, The Lewiston Council on the Arts will present "A Tribute to the Edmund Fitzgerald" at Water Street Landing, 115 S. Water St., Lewiston. This multisensory, multimedia tribute will be hosted by artist and Edmund Fitzgerald enthusiast Thomas Paul Asklar, who will commemorate the 42nd anniversary of the disaster.

A group of dedicated Historical Association of Lewiston volunteers were out in force Saturday to wash and wax Lewiston's two landmark statues: the Freedom Crossing Monument on the waterfront, and the Tuscarora Heroes Monument at Portage Road and Center Street. The volunteers perform the annual maintenance to preserve the luster and quality of the bronze sculptures.

The Youngstown Business and Professional Association is the recipient of a $500 check presented this week from First District Niagara County Legislator Clyde Burmaster. U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer on Monday demanded the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency immediately return to Niagara County to expedite the clean-up of radioactive hotspots in Lewiston and Niagara Falls. Schumer said the EPA recently abandoned cleanup activities at one of the sites without a full explanation to local residents, and said the EPA should return to Niagara County as quickly as possible to immediately resume remaining clean-up efforts.

Jamie Hagerty, an 18-year-old Niagara University student majoring in psychology, won the Niagara County Peach Queen scholarship pageant last month. She also competed for Peach Queen in 2016, placing third. Jamie evolved as a contestant this year in her stage presence and ability to answer questions under pressure.

Lewiston fire crews are credited with staging a quick response to a structure fire in the village late last month. The Sept. 29 call on the 400 block of Plain Street involved a garage structure fire, fully engulfed in a historical section on the village's west side - an area of well-maintained residences, the nearby Lewiston Historical Museum and numerous businesses around the block on the Center Street strip.

The Niagara Power collegiate baseball team entertained kids, families and fans at Sal Maglie Stadium from 2007 to 2015. After two whole summers removed from the New York Collegiate Baseball League, the Power have come back home to Niagara Falls.
On Monday afternoon, representatives from Niagara University and the Niagara Power came together to announce the return of the Power.
