Collins, Ortt seek answers on IJC nominees

Republican New York State Sen. Rob Ortt is calling for the U.S. Senate to confirm U.S. International Joint Committee nominees. Likewise, GOP U.S. Rep. Chris Collins has led a letter calling on the U.S. Senate to approve President Donald Trump's nominees to the IJC, which oversees all waters between the U.S. and Canada. Currently, the IJC is "in limbo," Collins' camp said, because it only has two of its six commissioners in office. A quorum of four is necessary to conduct business.

The Historical Association of Lewiston welcomed the community to the Brickyard Brewing Company on Tuesday for a special treat: Emmy Award-winning photojournalist Isadore "Izzy" Bleckman and his wife, Mary Roseberry, screened the documentary "Risking Everything: A Story of Niagara's Freedom Seekers." The 33-minute film chronicles Lewiston's role in the Underground Railroad, juxtaposing stories with sculptor Susan Geissler's work in creating the Freedom Crossing Monument.

The Old Fort Niagara Association will host a Native American history symposium on Saturday, March 30, titled "Fort Niagara through Native Eyes" at the Tuscarora Nation House in Lewiston. Preparations are underway for the 2019 Northwest Jazz Festival, which will take place Aug. 23-24 in the Village of Lewiston. It was announced Thursday The board of directors and Jazz Festival staff will hold a fundraiser, "A Taste of Jazz," from 4-8 p.m. Sunday, March 31, at the Brickyard Brewing Co., 436 Center St. The event will help offset some of the costs of producing the free, two-day outdoor music festival.

Dr. Glenda R. Rose, Dr. Thomas G. Barba and the staff of Rose Chiropractic P.C. in Lewiston held their 29th annual "Doctors with a Heart Day" on Saturday, Feb. 9. Chiropractic adjustments, examinations and nutritional testing were exchanged for donations of food, collected to benefit the Niagara Community Action Program's food pantry.
