"We know nursing homes are a sign of concern for us, because the numbers of residents getting sick is going up, and number of positives in the nursing homes are going up. So, it'll allow us to take that hundred and put it towards trying to provide a testing for people who work in assisted living centers, nursing homes. These are people who have symptoms. And it allow us to make sure that we're preventing the spread of the infection through a nursing home or through an assisted living center."

John Syracuse, vice chairman of the Niagara County Legislature, on Monday said golf courses, campgrounds and boat launches in Niagara County are open in full accordance with Gov. Andrew Cuomo's executive orders, as well as guidance from the Niagara County Department of Health.

Personnel from Upper Mountain Fire Co., Lewiston Fire Co. No. 1, Youngstown Fire Co., Tri Community Ambulance, Ransomville Fire Co., Cambria Fire Co., Lewiston Police Department and the Niagara County Sheriff's Department held an "Appreciation Parade" Saturday evening for Mount St. Mary's health care workers. Lights were flashing with cheers and sirens sounding for hospital staff as the procession moved through the main parking lot as a sign of gratitude for those keeping the community safe and healthy.

Niagara County: Drug overdoses spike during pandemic

Acting Niagara County Sheriff Michael J. Filicetti, along with Niagara County law enforcement partners, report drug overdose cases have increased during the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of drug overdose cases dispatched by the Niagara County Sheriff's Office from Jan. 1 through April 6 has increased over 35% for the same time frame in 2019.

Structure fire in Ransomville

On Friday, the Niagara County Communications Center received a report of a structure fire at 3604 Curtis Ave., Ransomville. Deputies arrived on scene and observed heavy smoke coming from the northwest corner of the residence. All occupants and two canines were safely evacuated without injury. Ransomville and Wilson Fire Companies responded to the scene and quickly extinguished the fire. The damage was contained to the northwest corner of the structure.

Closure of all schools will continue now through Wednesday, April 29. The governor states this will again be reassessed in two weeks. There has been no discussion or guidance as to the closing of school for the remainder of the year. As hope springs eternal, we are still operating on the premise that schools will reopen at some certain point this year. We continue to look forward to returning to school and returning to normalcy.

On Wednesday, The Silo Restaurant owner Alan Hastings and GM Lexi Alfiere said, "We are eager to open for the 2020 season and have already started to assemble our team. We wish that we could take advantage of the great spring weather to begin our training, but will keep things on hold for a little while. On Tuesday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed an executive order extending limitations he placed on social gatherings to slow the spread of COVID-19. His mandate, "which closed or otherwise restricted public or private businesses or places of public accommodation, and which required postponement or cancellation of all nonessential gatherings of individuals of any size for any reason (e.g. parties, celebrations, games, meetings or other social events) ... shall be continued ... until 11:59 p.m. on April 29, 2020, unless later extended by a future executive order."
