The pilot project to fit three Grand Island school buses with stop arm cameras is now tentatively scheduled to begin the week of Feb. 18, not the end of March, as was reported in last week’s newspaper.
The pilot project, which was approved at the Jan. 6 meeting of the Grand Island Board of Education, is to last for three months.
According to Bob Merkle, assistant superintendent for school business and finance, “We will be collecting data on the number of violations, etc., to help us determine if we would like to move forward with purchasing the cameras and supporting programs. The goal of this program is to stop people from passing stopped school buses that are boarding and unboarding students. We want to keep our children safe!”
