Grand Island Historical Society’s open house from Dec. 6-8 featured a museum decorated for the Christmas season with a plethora of ornaments on Christmas trees, as well as refreshments and tours of River Lea, the society’s museum located in Beaver Island State Park.

Visitors had a chance to shop for holiday gifts and Christmas decorations, as well as platefuls of homemade cookies and homemade preserves and jams. Also, a handmade quilt was raffled off. In addition, live holiday music was offered by retired music teacher, Betsy Thomas.

Mary Cooke, the corresponding secretary for the Historical Society, said, “It went well. There was a lot of competition, and I think we will do a little more advertising next year.”

Cooke said the Historical Society has started to plan for the next year.

“In the new year, we take January and February off. We will do some inside work,” she said. “We will pack up Christmas. We have a New Year’s party for members only on Jan. 4. The library will continue working. We will have our first meeting in March for the membership, and then, we will start meeting again on the first Thursdays of the month, having programs at various meetings.”
