Guest Editorial by Town of Lewiston Supervisor Steve Broderick
When I took office on Jan. 1, 2016, I quickly learned that the current town and village police contract, which had been signed in 1995, had never been updated. There were several attempts by previous town and village boards to do so, but it was never finished. Although the original contract never officially “expired,” it was meant to be renegotiated approximately every five years.
Over the past several months, myself, John Jacoby and attorney Al Bax from the town, along with Tina Coppins, Nick Conde and attorney Joe Leone from the village, have met on a number of occasions – and I am happy to report that an agreement was reached and a new contract has been approved by both boards.
As a retired lieutenant with the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office, I understand how important it is to have a local police department for the Town and Village of Lewiston. I will always support Lewiston having its own police department, and believe that the community is a safer place because of them.
I want to thank everyone that was involved with this process, including the chief of Police, Frank Previte. It’s important to know that the Lewiston Police Department will be patrolling our streets in both the town and village for years to come.
