Starting next Saturday, March 2, DiMino Tops Lewiston customers can use a special Sentinel coupon to receive a free reusable shopping bag.

“We’re going to be giving away – while supplies last – probably close to 1,000 bags,” owner Anthony DiMino said.

Aware of proposed state legislation to ban plastic shopping bags, and wanting to be more environmentally friendly, DiMino is working to provide his customers with a better option.

“We live next to the Great Lakes – we live next to the water. We need to protect those areas from plastic bags,” he said.

Each Tops reusable bag is made of recycled material and can hold at least as much as a large paper bag (up to 20 pounds of groceries). Tops offers a variety of bag styles.

“They’re not frill; they’re not going to break,” DiMino said.

“You can fit a lot of stuff in here. Most of the people that use them, they’ll tell you they fill them,” he explained. DiMino also noted the shopping bags can be used at other stores.

The reusable bag coupon will be featured in the next edition of The Sentinel. There is no limit to the number of coupons each customer can use.

If patrons prefer, larger, more-expensive specialty bags are also available for purchase.
