British attack Youngstown

Early Thursday morning, more than 100 British soldiers marched down River Road, from Stella Niagara to Old Fort Niagara, to re-enact the taking of Fort Niagara by the British on Dec. 19, 1813. One hundred and ten spectators in the fort watched as the British came through the postern gate and proceeded to wrest the fort from the Americans after a short battle.

The re-enactors were treated to breakfast at the Youngstown Firehall, and then they proceeded to Falkner Park to honor those who fought, suffered and died in this conflict.

About 650 school children came to the fort to learn about the War of 1812. After military demonstrations inside the fort's walls, the kids were bused to locations in the Village of Youngstown to learn about the way life was in the early 19th century. Workstations were found at The Red Brick School, St. Bernard's R.C. Church, St. John's Episcopal Church and the First Presbyterian Church. (photos by Wayne Peters)
