State Sen. George Maziarz escorted 27 local veterans to Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, on his Western New York Heroes Flight. Most were World War II veterans, but a few Korean War vets also were included.
Despite the government shutdown that was still in progress, the veterans visited the World War II, Korean, Vietnam and Iwo Jima memorials, plus watched the changing of the guard at Arlington Cemetery.
Barricades were down at their first stop, the WWII memorial. After that, Maziarz interceded with a guard at one of the blocked roads and one of the Heroes Flight volunteers made sure the group got past barriers at another site.
So it was a tired, but happy group that returned to Western New York. Maziarz (center, wearing the blue volunteer shirt) is shown with his veterans at Arlington Cemetery. (photos by John A. Mikula)
