JULY 26 UPDATE: New York State Park Police statement: “After an extensive coordinated effort, active search and rescue operations for the 18-year-old male who entered the Niagara River on Wednesday will be transitioning into a localized recovery operation.
“Since that incident occurred, NYS Park Police, in coordination with the NYS Police, U.S. Border Patrol, U.S. Coast Guard – Niagara, Canadian Park Police, Erie County Aviation, Niagara County Aviation, and Niagara Falls Fire Department, have conducted a comprehensive search utilizing marine and aerial assets and shoreline searches. Park Police will continue to monitor the area.
“Our thoughts are with the young man's family and friends during this difficult time.”

The New York State Parks Police released the following statement on Wednesday:
“At approximately 10:15 a.m. on July 22, 2026, the NYS Park Police received a report of an 18-year-old male in the Niagara River near the bottom of the Whirlpool stairs.
“Witnesses stated the male had been standing on a rock fishing in a restricted area with five other individuals when he fell in the river. Witnesses further reported that the male was struggling to swim and stay afloat.
“There is currently a multiagency, binational search underway to include the NYS Park Police, NYS Police, U.S. Coast Guard – Niagara, Canadian Park Police, Erie County Aviation, Niagara County Aviation, and Niagara Falls Fire Department.”
