The Kiwanis Club of Lewiston announced the recipients of its 2026 scholarships, recognizing local students who have demonstrated academic excellence, leadership, and a strong commitment to community service. This year, John Donnelley and Josephine Majerski were awarded a $2,000 scholarship, while Leah Portwood was selected as the recipient of the $1,000 William and Joanne Roth Memorial Scholarship.
•John Donnelley, who will attend the U.S. Coast Guard Academy to study cybersecurity and computer science, was recognized for his dedication to community service through the Lewiston Kiwanis Peach Festival. In his scholarship essay, John reflected on how more than 80 hours of volunteer service taught him discipline, responsibility, humility and leadership. Through years of working alongside experienced Kiwanis members, he learned the value of earning trust, respecting others, and helping guide younger volunteers.
•Josephine Majerski, who plans to study environmental science at St. Bonaventure University, shared how community service has been a lifelong family tradition. From helping deliver Thanksgiving baskets to families in need to serving as the Easter Bunny at the annual Kiwanis Easter egg hunt, Josephine described how service has strengthened family bonds while bringing joy to others. Her essay highlighted the importance of giving back not for recognition, but for the happiness and connection it creates within the community.
•The William and Joanne Roth Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Leah Portwood, who will attend SUNY Cobleskill to pursue animal science. Leah's essay detailed her volunteer experiences assisting nursing home residents, participating in school fundraisers, supporting Niagara Hospice events, and helping at local farms. Through these experiences, she developed a deep sense of compassion and empathy that inspired her goal of pursuing a career in veterinary medicine. Leah's commitment to serving both people and animals reflects the spirit of the Roth Memorial Scholarship.
