On June 19, at approximately 5:30 p.m., the Niagara Falls Police Department crash investigation unit responded to the intersection of Niagara Falls Boulevard and 47th Street to investigate a crash involving a vehicle and an electric scooter.
A 2009 Buick, driven by a 23-year-old man, was traveling west on Niagara Falls Boulevard. While in the process of making a left-hand turn onto 47th Street, the vehicle was struck at a right angle by an eastbound electric scooter that was being operated by 62-year-old John Skrlin. Witnesses reported the vehicle had a green light and left-turn arrow and that the scooter allegedly passed through a red light.
Skrlin was not wearing a helmet and suffered serious head injuries. He was transported by ambulance to Erie County Medical Center where he was rushed into surgery. He succumbed to his injuries in the early morning hours of June 20.
