The City of North Tonawanda invites residents, former residents, and visitors to join a once-in-a-generation community celebration as the city opens its 1976 bicentennial time capsule and dedicates a new America 250 time capsule for future generations.

The event, titled "Opening the Past. Preserving the Future” will take place Thursday, July 23, at North Tonawanda City Hall, located at 216 Payne Ave.

Nearly 50 years ago, as part of the nation's bicentennial celebration, community leaders and residents came together to preserve a snapshot of life in North Tonawanda for future generations. On July 23, that capsule will be opened for the first time, revealing photographs, documents, memorabilia and memories from 1976.

The ceremony will include remarks from city officials, recognition of individuals connected to the original bicentennial effort, the official opening and presentation of the capsule's contents, and the dedication of a new America 250 time capsule that will preserve today's community for generations yet to come.

Following the ceremony, residents and guests are invited to stay for a community picnic featuring food, music, historical displays and opportunities to reconnect with friends, neighbors and former residents returning to North Tonawanda for this special occasion.

The community gathering begins at 11 a.m., followed by the official ceremony and welcoming remarks at 11:30 a.m. At noon, the 1976 Bicentennial Time Capsule will be opened, and the America 250 time capsule will be dedicated. The community picnic and celebration follows at 1 p.m.

"This event is an opportunity to reflect on where we've been, celebrate where we are today, and leave something meaningful for the generations who will call North Tonawanda home in the future," Mayor Austin Tylec said. "The opening of a 50-year-old time capsule is something most communities experience only once, and we're excited to share this historic moment with residents past and present."

The city is especially interested in connecting with individuals who participated in the original 1976 bicentennial celebration, including former elected officials, committee members, volunteers, city employees, and residents who may have memories, photographs or stories from the original time capsule dedication. Family members of those involved are also encouraged to attend. Anyone with information or memorabilia related to the 1976 bicentennial activities is invited to contact the mayor's office prior to the event.

The city hopes this celebration will serve not only as a look back at North Tonawanda's history, but also as a reunion of generations who have helped shape the community over the past 50 years. The event is free and open to the public.
