Grand Island’s traffic box art initiative brings visual artistry to town center
Submitted by the Town of Grand Island Economic Development Advisory Board
Grand Island’s traffic box art project, “Paint the Town,” returns following a successful inaugural year. The “Paint the Town” project gives residents the opportunity to transform everyday traffic signal boxes into colorful, eye-catching works of public art.
The traffic boxes are in high-visibility locations that will showcase the selected artwork for the entire community to enjoy, adding color, creativity and community pride to Grand Island’s town center.
Led by the town’s Economic Development Advisory Board, “Paint the Town” invites local artists to share their talents while celebrating what makes Grand Island unique. This year’s theme is “Our Community, Our Canvas.” Artists are encouraged to interpret the theme and bring their vision and imaginative designs to life.
Open to Grand Island residents ages 13 and up, the project welcomes artists of all experience levels, including students, emerging creatives, and established artists. No prior public art experience is required. Up to three designs will be selected this year, with each chosen artist receiving a $200 honorarium for their approved final design.
Applications are open through June 30. Grand Island residents can find application forms and full details on the town’s website at: https://www.grandislandny.gov/1496/Paint-the-Town.
The Economic Development Advisory Board is an advisory body to the Town of Grand Island. The advisory board’s mission is to foster economic growth and vitality within the Grand Island community, while preserving the unique character of the town.
By bringing local artwork into everyday public spaces, “Paint the Town” aims to foster community pride while creating a more vibrant and welcoming Grand Island.
