Erie County, City of Buffalo, Niagara County, City of Niagara Falls join Canadian counterparts
Submitted by the Press Secretary to the Erie County Executive
Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz on Monday announced Erie County will join a group of leaders representing the eight municipalities bordering lakes Erie and Ontario, the “Niagara 8.” Along with the elected leaders (City of Buffalo; the City of Niagara Falls; Niagara County; the Regional Municipality of Niagara, Ontario; the City of Niagara Falls, Ontario; the Town of Fort Erie, Ontario; and the Town of Niagara-On-The Lake, Ontario), Poloncarz co-signed a letter outlining the group’s deep concern with the real-world economic consequences of the tariffs but also underscoring the longtime, deep ties between the U.S. and Canada.
“I recently asked my partners in government on both sides of the border to convene the ‘Niagara 8’ group, which better positions us to collaboratively tackle challenges and build upon our strengths,” Poloncarz said. “Western New York and Southern Ontario have a rich, interconnected history, and we remain committed partners and neighbors, regardless of the climate in Washington or Ottawa.”
$2.5 billion (U.S.) worth of goods cross the Canadian-American border each day, while $6 billion in lumber and wood products for the U.S. homebuilding industry came from Canada in 2024. Moreover, fully 70% of all Canadian imports to the U.S. are used to manufacture other U.S.-made products.
