Regionwide party to recognize and celebrate individuals with Down syndrome

GiGi’s Playhouse Down Syndrome Achievement Center Press Release

On Friday, March 21, aka World Down Syndrome Day, GiGi’s Playhouse Down Syndrome Achievement Center will partner with many of the region’s iconic buildings and attractions to shine a yellow and blue light on WNY.

Yellow and blue are the colors of Down syndrome awareness, and many locations – including Buffalo City Hall, Niagara Falls, the Peace Bridge, Oishei Children’s Hospital, the Ford Water Tower, M&T Plaza, and other members of the Buffalo LIT partnership – will light up in honor of those individuals and families touched by Down syndrome around the world.

“Down syndrome occurs when there are three copies of the 21st chromosome. Every year, on March 21 (or 3/21), individuals worldwide join to celebrate those who have Down syndrome and raise awareness for those who may be unfamiliar with it,” said GiGi’s Playhouse Buffalo Executive Director Emily Mondschein. “Lighting up the night has become an annual tradition at GiGi’s, because we believe there is no better way to honor this community than by literally shining a light on it.”

GiGi’s Playhouse will also host a World Down Syndrome Day celebration from 6-8:30 p.m. Friday with a DJ, hors d'oeuvres, giveaways, and more! All are welcome, but registration is requested. Register today at www.gigisplayhouse.org/buffalo/events.

Located at 326 Kenmore Ave., Buffalo, GiGi’s Playhouse Buffalo serves all individuals with Down syndrome and their families in the greater WNY community. For more information, visit www.gigisplayhouse.org/buffalo.

GiGi’s Playhouse is the only network of Down Syndrome Achievement Centers, with over 60 brick and mortar locations across the U.S. and Mexico. Every day, GiGi’s Playhouse changes lives by providing free, life-changing therapeutic, educational and career training programs for individuals of all ages. The organization also helps advance a vital social impact goal by showing the world what individuals with Down syndrome can achieve as students, co-workers, volunteers, friends, and valued members of their communities.
