Niagara History Center Press Release & Photo

In celebration of the 2025 bicentennial of the opening of the Erie Canal, the Niagara History Center has mounted “Images of the Erie Canal,” a free public exhibition of artworks featuring the Erie Canal and Lockport locks. Comprising more than a dozen paintings from the collections of the History Center and Charles Rand Penney, the artworks highlight local artists from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries.

The exhibit is free to the public at the Erie Canal Discovery Center, 24 Church St., Lockport, and will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Friday and Saturday from March 14 through April 30.

“We are happy to help Lockport and Niagara County kick off a year of celebrations and observances of the 200th anniversary of the Erie Canal,” said James Lester, the NHC’s executive director. “The canal played a major part in shaping the county and communities that we have today.”
