Niagara County Clerk Joseph A. Jastrzemski said planning is underway for this year’s Purple Heart celebration, which will see more names added to the Purple Heart monument and the Book of Honor at the Niagara County Courthouse in Lockport. The event is scheduled for Sunday Aug. 3. The Purple Heart is a military decoration awarded to members of the U.S. Armed Forces who were wounded or killed by enemy action.
Jastrzemski encouraged anyone who is a Purple Heart recipient, or knows of one – perhaps a family member or friend – to come forward by June 1 to be included in the ceremony. Currently, there are more than 400 names on the Purple Heart monument and in the Book of Honor.
“We are well into planning this year’s Purple Heart event and continue our efforts to recognize and preserve the legacy of any Niagara County resident who was wounded or killed fighting for our country,” Jastrzemski said. “If a family member knows of a Purple Heart veteran who may have passed, we can work with them to complete the necessary form to ensure their loved one’s contribution is forever enshrined on our monument.”
To be included in the Book of Honor and to take part in this year’s event, Purple Heart veterans or their families must complete a short application that can be obtained at https://cms5.revize.com/revize/niagaracounty/PURPLE%20HEART%20FORM%202025.pdf.
Those with questions can call the clerk’s office at 716-439-7025 or the Veteran’s Service Agency at 716-438-4090. Jastrzemski said details for the Aug. 3 activity will be forthcoming closer to the event.
