Buffalo man sentenced for fatal stabbing on city's west side

Acting Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane announced Timothy A. Austin, 37, of Buffalo, was sentenced yesterday afternoon before Erie County Court Judge Sheila A. DiTullio to a determinate sentence of 16 years in state prison followed by five years post-release supervision.

On Sunday, June 11, 2023, at approximately 1 p.m., Buffalo Police officers responded to a 911 call for a reported stabbing on the 400 block of Niagara Street. The defendant stabbed the victim once in the chest. The victim, 49-year-old Tremaine Mayfield, was taken by ambulance to ECMC where he died from the injury.

Austin pleaded guilty to one count of manslaughter in the first degree (class “B” violent felony). The defendant pleaded guilty, as charged, to the sole count in the indictment on Nov. 8, 2024.

Keane commends Det. Adam Stephany and Det. Ray Krug of the Buffalo Police Department for their work in this investigation.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Rebecca L. Schnirel of the homicide bureau and Assistant District Attorney Ryan M. Flaherty of the major crimes bureau.
