Buffalo man pleads guilty to manslaughter for fatally stabbing victim on city's west side

Acting Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane announced Timothy A. Austin, 37, of Buffalo, pleaded guilty yesterday afternoon Erie County Court Judge Sheila A. DiTullio to one count of manslaughter in the first degree (class “B” violent felony). The defendant pleaded guilty, as charged, to the sole count in the indictment.

On Sunday, June 11, 2023, at approximately 1 p.m., Buffalo Police officers responded to a 911 call for a reported stabbing on the 400 block of Niagara Street. The defendant stabbed the victim once in the chest. The victim, 49-year-old Tremaine Mayfield, was taken by ambulance to ECMC where he died from the injury.

Austin faces a maximum of 25 years in prison when he is sentenced on Tuesday, Dec. 17. He remains held without bail.

Keane commends Det. Adam Stephany and Det. Ray Krug of the Buffalo Police Department for their work in this investigation.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Rebecca L. Schnirel of the homicide bureau and Assistant District Attorney Ryan M. Flaherty of the major crimes bureau.
