Press Release
Visit the USS Slater Monday, Nov. 11, for Veterans Day! On this day, we celebrate all veterans – their sacrifice, bravery, selflessness and commitment to protect this nation. While we will remember service men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, let us also remember Veterans Day is a celebration of the more than 18 million veterans still living today.
Join us for our ceremony aboard USS Slater at 9 a.m.
Veterans Day began as a commemoration of the end of World War I. Fighting ceased when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month in 1918. For that reason, Nov. 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.” The observance of Veterans Day not only preserves the historical significance of the date, but helps focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day. A celebration to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.
All veterans are granted free admission to tour USS Slater on Veterans Day.
Admission is charged for tours of USS Slater: adults: $12, seniors: $10, children: $8 and children 5 years old and under are admitted for free.
