Niagara County Sheriff Michael J. Filicetti announced Niagara County-area law enforcement agencies will participate in a special effort to bring awareness to the dangers of impaired driving. Law enforcement officers across New York will take to the roads in a combined effort to stop impaired driving, prevent injuries, and save lives.
The statewide STOP-DWI high-visibility engagement campaign efforts start Thursday, Oct. 31, and will end Sunday, Nov. 3. The Niagara County Sheriff's Office, as well as law enforcement agencies from across Niagara County, will be out in force for this coordinated effort to reduce the number of impaired driving-related injuries and deaths.
The STOP-DWI Halloween high-visibility engagement campaign is one of many statewide enforcement initiatives promoted by STOP-DWI New York and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. The statewide STOP-DWI high-visibility engagement campaign also targets Thanksgiving, the holiday season, the Super Bowl, St. Patrick's Day, April 20 (4-20), Memorial Day weekend, July 4th weekend, and Labor Day. In addition to Halloween night, there will be a concentrated effort the weekend following. During these times, the focus of our community engagement will be alcohol-impaired driving.
While STOP-DWI efforts across New York have led to significant reductions in the numbers of alcohol- and drug-related fatalities, still too many lives are being lost because of crashes caused by drunk or impaired drivers. Highly visible and highly publicized efforts like the STOP-DWI high-visibility engagement campaign aim to further reduce the incidences of drunk and impaired driving.
