Kenyon Serpas, a junior at the University at Buffalo, was the recipient of this year’s Historical Association of Lewiston’s Indigenous Peoples' Day Scholarship. The award ceremony was held Monday at the Tuscarora Heroes Monument on Center Street, in recognition of the longstanding friendship between the people of Lewiston and the Tuscarora Nation.

Kenyon, 20, is the son of Aquiles and Kateri Serpas, and is studying history at U.B. with plans to graduate in 2027 with a master’s degree in education. He will pursue a teaching career.

Tom Collister, Lewiston Museum curator, offered a brief history of Indigenous Peoples' Day. Both the Village and Town of Lewiston were among the first communities in the nation to officially recognize the holiday.

This was the seventh annual scholarship award.

Kenyon Serpas, center, received a $750 Historical Association of Lewiston’s Indigenous Peoples' Day Scholarship while joined by family, friends, teachers and local volunteers.

Lewiston Museum Curator Tom Collister, and Tuscarora Nation council member and elder Neil Patterson Sr., address the crowd at Monday’s ceremony.
