October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month

The Western New York Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association will hold an awareness presentation about Alzheimer’s disease and dementia for families caring for someone with Down syndrome. The program will take place at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, at the WNY Chapter offices located at 6400 Sheridan Drive, Suite 320, in Amherst.
The free program will provide information about Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, what the warning signs are, the importance of early detection and the many resources available for caregivers in Western New York.
“As people with Down syndrome age, they have a much higher risk of developing Alzheimer's disease compared to their peers,” said Amara May, director of program outreach at the WNY Chapter. “Knowing the warning signs and early detection are essential for those with Down syndrome.
“We want to let caregivers know we are here for them and can provide the education and resources they need,” she said, noting October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month.
