On Monday, Sept. 30, at 3:20 a.m., the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call regarding a hazardous material incident at the Archem Inc. building in the Town of Wheatfield. It was reported a spill of approximately 100 gallons of chemical, contained inside of the building. The scene was quickly secured by a joint command of Bergholz Volunteer Fire Co., Niagara Air Reserve Station, Sanborn Volunteer Fire Co. and the Niagara County fire coordinator’s office. Resources responded from the above agencies, along with the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office, Niagara County Hazardous Materials Team, Tri-Community Ambulance, Niagara County EMS and Shawnee Volunteer Ambulance.
Three employees were transported, with two taken to Mount St. Mary’s Hospital and one taken to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center for evaluation and precautionary decontamination. The scene was stabilized without further exposure to responding personnel or the surrounding area.
There are no environmental or personal health risks to the surrounding businesses or residents at this time. Further investigation into the industrial incident is ongoing.
