Mechanicsburg, Pa.
1943-2024
Christian Hipp, a quiet man, who loved his family, good food and travel, and was an intrepid skier, was born Sept. 3, 1943, to George W. and Mary Margaret (Stout) Hipp in Wellsville. He died Aug. 18 in the Oaks at Bethany Village in Mechanicsburg. Chris was a student at Alfred University and graduated from Syracuse University, where he received his BS and Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry. During his Syracuse days, Chris was set up on a blind date with his future wife, Anne Elizabeth (McFarland) Hipp. Chris’s order of a mushroom pizza was not a promising start, but he and Anne had an interesting and good life together for 56 years.
Chris went on to Ohio State University for his post-doctoral fellowship; there he was part of a group of international students, and he considered his time at OSU as one of the formative and high points of his life. He worked at DuPont and Moore Corporation, starting as a bench chemist and ending his career as vice president of research and technology at Moore. During his time with Moore, Chris studied and became fluent in Italian to better participate in an Italian joint venture. His business and travel trips to Italy sparked a love of that country with their leisurely meals, good food available everywhere and emphasis on family.
Chris is the father of Adriane (Michael) Lioudis and Mark (Jen) Hipp, and grandfather of Elena, Mia, Peter, Christian, Daniela, Lauren and Brynn. He is survived by his wife, Anne; his twin brother, Robert George Hipp; his younger sister, Mary Jo Hipp; his children and grandchildren. He was a quietly proud father and grandfather, generous without measure to things important, but willing to let the tank run dry to get to the less-expensive gas on the highway. He fought the fight against an insurmountable opponent, Parkinson’s, without complaint, always grateful for the life he had lived.
A private celebration of his life will be held in October.
