The American Legion National Convention held its 2024 National Concert Band Contest in Indianapolis on Aug. 24, drawing bands from around the country to New Orleans to compete in the American Legion National Concert Band Contest. Top honors were awarded to the American Legion Band of the Tonawandas, with a score of 96.7.
Second place went to the Joliet American Legion Band from Joliet, Illinois, with a score of 94.83. Third place was given to Kansas City American Legion Band from, Kansas City, Missouri, with 89.67 points. Fourth place was awarded to American Legion Post 377 Band from Kenner, Louisiana, with 86 points. Additional bands (no scores) included the North Dakota American Legion Band and the Minnesota 9th District Band.
After an intense week of preparation, the American Legion Band of the Tonawandas performed in the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center Theatre. The 30-minute performance drew cheers, a rousing applause and a standing ovation from the audience. The band subsequently took first-place in the contest, earning the 2024 National Championship.
Now in its 95th year, the band is celebrating its 23rd National Championship. It performed under music director Matthew Cool. The award was presented by American Legion National Cmdr. Daniel J. Seehafer.
