Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center announced Catherine Smith, a June graduate of Niagara Wheatfield High School, is the recipient of its Junior Volunteer Scholarship.

A resident of the Town of Niagara, Smith volunteered in the hospital’s emergency department, compiling 386 hours of service over two years.

She will enter Niagara University in the fall, working toward a bachelor’s degree in nursing.

“Volunteering has given me a deep understanding of the health care environment and the importance of teamwork,” Smith said. “It has tremendously helped me choose my career path.”

The $500 scholarship, co-sponsored by the Medical Center Auxiliary and Foundation, has been awarded since 1999 to graduating high school seniors who volunteered at Memorial or Schoellkopf Health Center for at least two years and 100 hours.
