One hundred New York state high school student musicians from 27 districts traveled and performed together as part of the American Music Abroad 2024 Empire Tour under the leadership of head directors Richard and Christine Riederer from July 7-26.
The 20-day tour started at SUNY Fredonia with an intense three days of rehearsals and orientation sessions to prepare the students for travel and musical performances abroad. The orientation culminated with a farewell concert in King Concert Hall for all of the students’ families and friends.
The tour, consisting of a chorus, orchestra and band, traveled to Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Italy, Austria, Germany and Switzerland, performing seven concerts to appreciative European audiences.
The students experienced many cultural and culinary delights, marveled at the beautiful architecture and scenery, and learned more about World War II history by taking a sobering tour of the Dachau Concentration Camp outside of Munich.
The following districts were represented: Amherst, Buffalo Public, Cassadaga Valley, Chautauqua Lake, Clarence, Dunkirk, Fairport, Fredonia, Frontier, Greece, Hamburg, Jamestown, Lake Shore, Lewiston-Porter, Niagara Falls, Niagara-Wheatfield, Orchard Park, Oswego, Pittsford, Rush Henrietta, Silver Creek, Southwestern, Starpoint, Sweet Home, Webster, West Seneca and York CSD.
American Music Abroad has sent over 45,000 students to Europe over the past 40 years. The Empire Tour will travel next summer from July 10-29, 2025. For more information, contact the Riederers at [email protected].
