Niagara County Legislature Chairman Becky Wydysh announced the Niagara County website has moved to the “.gov” domain effective today. The county’s website will now be www.niagaracounty.gov. Those who go to the old site, www.niagaracounty.com, will automatically be redirected to the new site.

The federal Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has been urging government bodies to make this change.

“The public will see no difference in the new site, but for those who may recognize they have been redirected to a different URL, we want to be sure they knew this wasn’t any sort of scam,” Wydysh said.

CISA believes that “.gov” helps the public know that the website they are on is a bona fide U.S.-based government organization, thereby reducing uncertainty on the trustworthiness of the information. Only verifiable government organizations are eligible for .gov domains.

“The fact is, anyone, anywhere in the world, can set up a website with a ‘.com’ or ‘.org’ domain and use a name that can confuse people into thinking it is an official government site,” Wydysh said. “CISA manages ‘.gov’ and runs a vetting process to ensure only legitimate government entities are allowed to use the domain.”
