Specialized swiftwater rescue training and constant vigilance help avert tragedy
Submitted by the Police Benevolent Association of New York State
The PBA of New York State commends New York State Park Police officer Nathan Sibenik for his quick and decisive action that saved the life of a woman experiencing a mental health crisis at Niagara Falls State Park.
On the afternoon of Friday, July 19, the woman was witnessed intentionally entering the American Rapids. If not for the specialized swiftwater rescue training possessed by Park Police officer Sibenik, the woman would have surely perished. Following her rescue, the woman was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment and care.
PBA of New York State President Jim McCartney said, “Mental health calls are an increasing component of our members’ jobs. Fortunately, law enforcement officers are receiving more training on recognizing and responding to these life-or-death situations. We are committed to protecting the public in any and every way we can – whether from criminal acts, responding to natural disasters, or facilitating access to critical medical services including mental health treatment and suicide prevention. None of us are immune to the stresses and challenges of life, and when it becomes overwhelming, we strive to be a lifeline for the members of our community.”
Established in 2011, the Police Benevolent Association of New York State (PBA of New York State), is a law enforcement labor union representing the interests of more than 1,100 members of the New York State Agency Police Services Unit (APSU). The PBA of New York State is the exclusive bargaining agent for the New York State University (SUNY) Police, the New York State Environmental Conservation Police, the New York State Park Police, and the New York State Forest Rangers. Our members police and protect New York state’s public universities and colleges; state parks and historic sites; and they enforce state laws and protect our lands and forests and ensure environmental safety and quality throughout the state.
