The Niagara Gospel Mission served a beef on weck lunch and pizza and wings dinner to the homeless community of Niagara Falls on Tuesday to celebrate the foods of Western New York.
“The Western New York Community is a very generous community that loves serving their neighbors. We are grateful to honor that here at the Niagara Gospel Mission by serving some Western New York favorite foods during 716 Day,” Executive Director John Cooper Jr. said. 716 Day is special to Western New Yorkers because July 16 marks the area’s area code, 716, on the calendar. “We are serving more and more meals here in the community due to hard times for many people. They may not be able to afford a pizza and wings or beef on weck, so we are grateful we can provide that for them.”
A team from Leadership Niagara helped the Niagara Gospel Mission serve the meals.
The Niagara Gospel Mission also participated in Give 716, a Buffalo Bills and Sabres Foundation initiative to engage the community to give to local nonprofits. The agency raised money for a box truck so it can pick up food and clothing donations from the community to serve the homeless in Niagara Falls.
“Churches, businesses, and many other people and organizations are so generous with their time and money,” Cooper said. “They give food to us, and we need a way to pick it up after our box truck died. We are grateful to Give 716 to help us get closer to our financial goal to buy and new truck.”
