“Gran fondo” aren’t words heard too often in Niagara County, but for Niagara Hospice, it is 11 years going strong holding the annual Hospice Gran Fondo.
Translated to “Big Ride,” the concept of a “gran fondo” originates from Italy, where long-distance bike rides are followed by big celebrations. This year’s event will take place Aug. 10 at the Niagara Hospice campus, located at 4675 Sunset Drive, Lockport.
Many individuals ride in memory of a loved one, while others are cycling enthusiasts. Proceeds from the event support the specialized care and services provided by the nonprofit organization.
Presented by M&T Bank, The Hospice Gran Fondo offers a 15-mile, 33-mile or 62-mile route. Each route features a number of rest stops stocked with refreshments. Following the ride, participants return to the Niagara Hospice campus for a large post-race party, complete with food, drinks and live music by Midlife Crisis. For those not taking part in the ride, a separate ticket may be purchased to enjoy the after-party.
