City of North Tonawanda Press Release
The City of North Tonawanda Office of the Mayor is proud to announce an exciting new project proposal to design a city flag that embodies our rich history, vibrant culture, and ongoing revitalization. This initiative seeks to draw inspiration from our past while highlighting our dedication to continuous advancement and progress.
The name "Tonawanda" originates from the Seneca language and means "Swift Running Water," a fitting metaphor for our city’s dynamic and forward-moving spirit. The new city flag will encapsulate this ethos, representing the pride and culture of North Tonawanda while symbolizing our commitment to the future.
The proposed flag will be prominently displayed in various key locations throughout the city, including Gateway Harbor Park, the western gateway to the Erie Canal. Gateway Harbor Park, a central feature of downtown North Tonawanda, has established itself as a premier destination for boating and recreation in Western New York. The new flag will enhance the aesthetic and cultural identity of significant areas, celebrating our heritage and embracing our growth.
Artists from across the community are invited to submit their designs for consideration. The artist of the selected design will be awarded a $1,000 prize. This initiative not only provides an opportunity for local artists to showcase their talent, but also allows the community to participate in a historic moment for our city.
The deadline for the request for proposal submissions is 4 p.m. July 26. We encourage all interested artists to contribute their vision to this important project.
Mayor Austin Tylec expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, "This flag will be a symbol of our city's pride, resilience, and continuous progress. It is a chance for us to honor our past while looking forward to a bright future. We look forward to seeing the creativity and spirit of our community reflected in the new design."
