Island motorists advised of detours
The Grand Island Highway Department announced the state Department of Transportation will conduct road maintenance/repair work to the Staley Road bridge over the I-190 starting next month.
“Thruway maintenance will be performing above deck repair work, and we will be closing the bridge to facilitate the repairs,” Grand Island Highway Superintendent Richard Crawford said.
The bridge closure is anticipated to begin Monday, July 8, and last for two weeks. Crawford said there would be two portable variable message signs installed on Staley Road one week prior to the work, advising drivers of the pending closure.
During the bridge closure, motorists are advised to utilize the following detours:
•Staley Road, westbound: I-190 north to Exit 19 (Whitehaven Road). Turn right from the Exit 19 ramp onto Whitehaven Road; make a right turn from Whitehaven onto Baseline Road and continue to the end of the detour at Staley Road.
•Staley Road, eastbound: Take Baseline Road to Whitehaven Road. Turn right from Baseline Road onto Whitehaven Road; make a right turn from Whitehaven Road onto Grand Island Boulevard; and continue on Grand Island Boulevard to the end the detour at the traffic circle.
Crawford said the planned DOT work includes: removing steel armor bridge joints and concrete headers at each end of the bridge; installing new joint header concrete and joint seals; repairing isolated deck spalls and sealing the entire concrete deck surface; and removing and replacing the adjacent asphalt approach transition.
