Dawn Cody of Wheatfield was honored with Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper’s Volunteer of the Year Award at BNW’s “Emerald Evening 35th Anniversary Gala” held May 21.
A press release noted, “Dawn has been a volunteer for BN Waterkeeper for 25 years. She focuses her involvement mainly in Niagara County. Every year, she is captain to a shoreline sweep at such places as the LaSalle Waterfront Park, Gill Creek Park, Fort Niagara State Park or the Stella Niagara Preserve. This yearly event, held in April of each year, draws over 2,000 volunteers in the Niagara watershed.
“Other Niagara County BN Waterkeeper projects that Dawn has supported are the living shoreline restoration at Hyde Park and tree planting/riparian restoration along Gill Creek in Niagara Falls; removal of invasive plants at the Stella Niagara Preserve; and most recently, the Cayuga Creek stream and floodplain project. The Cayuga Creek project is the only project in WNY of this kind, seeking to mitigate flooding through channel reconstruction.
“Dawn is also a volunteer ambassador for Waterkeeper and can be found at community events talking about topics from safe fish consumption to preventing shoreline erosion.
“If you’d like to learn more or would like to become involved, look for Dawn at Plant-O-Rama, hosted by the Youngstown Garden Club, on June 8 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.”
