The VFW Buddy Poppy Days fund drive, with its bright red poppies, continues today.
Members of Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial VFW Post 9249 are accepting donations at various sites on Grand Island, including Tops supermarket. For a donation, you get to wear your Buddy Poppy in honor of U.S. military veterans and in support of those veterans in need.
The VFW post is located at 2121 Grand Island Blvd.
Buddy Poppies are assembled by disabled veterans. Proceeds of the fundraising campaign are used for the benefit of disabled and needy veterans, as well as for the widows and orphans of deceased veterans at the national Home in Eaton Rapids, Michigan.
A proclamation announcing Buddy Poppy Days was presented at the Grand Island Town Board meeting on Monday, May 20.
The proclamation said, “The Town of Grand Island does hereby urge all patriotic citizens to wear a Buddy Poppy, especially on Memorial Day, as evidence of their gratitude to the men and women of this country who have risked their lives in defense of the freedoms that we continue to enjoy as American citizens.”
The annual distribution of Buddy Poppies by Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States has been officially recognized and endorsed by government leaders since 1922.
