Niagara County Legislator Christopher McKimmie, R-Niagara Falls, has successfully secured funding to support the LaSalle Post 1142 of the American Legion, located in the busy Buffalo Avenue business district.

Through the Niagara County Facade Improvement Grant 2.0, McKimmie helped secure a matching grant of $22,500 for essential repairs to the building’s facade and roof. This grant will also help preserve an existing mural on the building's front that honors veterans.

A press release noted, “Importantly, no local tax dollars are being used to fund this grant, which is financed through the county’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds.

“The LaSalle Post 1142 faced substantial financial challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, as their primary fundraising source – hall rentals for weddings, receptions, showers and community events – was severely impacted by restrictions.”

McKimmie said, "It is entirely appropriate to provide the LaSalle Post 1142 of the American Legion with this grant using ARPA funds, as they were significantly impacted by COVID-19 restrictions. Their primary fundraising abilities were hampered, affecting their capacity to support veterans and the community. This grant will help them continue their vital work.”

The repairs and improvements are expected to begin in June and be finished before August, when the American Legion is anticipating hosting some larger special events.

In addition, McKimmie, in a joint resolution with Legislator Jeffrey Elder, D-Niagara Falls, secured an additional $3,000 from the county's Community Partnership Fund to further support the American Legion. Both McKimmie and Elder are Air Force veterans and supporters of military and veterans’ organizations.

The press release added, “This funding marks a significant step towards revitalizing the LaSalle Post 1142 and ensuring it can continue its critical mission of serving veterans and the broader community. Legislator McKimmie's advocacy for the Niagara County Facade Improvement Grant 2.0 demonstrates his commitment to supporting local businesses and organizations, helping them improve and thrive once more.”
