Wilson Lions President Anne Basile announced the Floyd “Red” Clark Memorial Scholarship will once again be given to a worthy senior in the Wilson Central School District.
A press release stated, “Floyd Clark was a man of very humble beginnings; yet, with only a seventh-grade education, he became a very successful businessman and a prominent member of our local community. He had an extremely strong work ethic, which helped him as he overcame many obstacles in his life, never letting anything get in the way of what he wanted to achieve. He valued his church and his family and was committed to his community. He was a proud and outstanding member of the Wilson Lions Club from 1962 to his death in 2010.”
This $5,000 annual scholarship has been funded by Floyd’s wife, Mary Clark, since 2011. It is awarded to one Wilson student each year. The student must be accepted into an accredited post-high school technical program or college. The scholarship is awarded to the student who best reflects Clark’s attributes: ambitious, self-motivated, observant, resourceful, hard-working, civic-minded.
High grades and sports performance are not critical to this scholarship. The Lions Club and a representative of the Clark family will determine the winning candidate. This year’s recipient will be announced at “Class Night” on June 8.
