On Wednesday, New York State Sen. Sean Ryan recognized two members of the Buffalo Bills training staff whose actions saved the life of Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin.
Bills head athletic trainer Nate Breske and assistant athletic trainer Denny Kellington were among the guests of honor in the Senate Chamber as the Senate passed a resolution sponsored by Sen. Jamaal Bailey to formally recognize March 2023 as Athletic Training Month in New York.
When Hamlin collapsed on the field during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals in early January, Kellington was the person who administered CPR to keep him alive until he could be transported to the hospital.
Ryan said, “The work that Nate, Denny, and their colleagues do every week keeps our sporting heroes in the game, but in January the world saw that they were the true heroes. Damar Hamlin’s recovery was an incredible story that brought hope to people in Western New York and throughout the country – and it was only possible because of the quick action of the Bills training staff and medical team. I was proud to be able to thank these men individually for their work, and to recognize the important role that athletic trainers at every level of competition play in keeping players and spectators safe every day.”
