Launched in 2021, Destination Dental School is open to underrepresented undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students
By the University at Buffalo
The University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine’s Destination Dental School – a program that aims to remove barriers to careers in dentistry for students underrepresented in the profession – is seeking applicants for this summer’s program.
The free, eight-week program provides participants with an understanding of the day-to-day life of a dentist and dental student, helps strengthen their dental school applications and develops their skills as researchers. It includes seven weeks of remote learning, followed by a week of in-person learning. Travel and lodging stipends are included.
In Destination Dental School, participants take part in hands-on simulation activities and research projects, clinical rotations that explore the various disciplines within dental medicine, dental school application assistance, and receive access to mentorship from UB dental students and faculty, and networking opportunities with local dentistry leaders.
Students also receive extensive preparation for the dental admission test — a standardized exam required for entry into dental school – and program participants who apply to the UB School of Dental Medicine receive an application fee waiver.
“Destination Dental School is a program focused on strengthening the academic proficiency and career development of students underrepresented in dentistry, as well as preparing them for a successful application and matriculation to dental school,” said Jessica Scates, coordinator of equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives at the UB School of Dental Medicine. “Our reach continues to grow every year and we are eager to welcome the new additions to our Destination Dental School network.”
How to apply: For more information, visit the Destination Dental School website and fill out an application. The application deadline is March 31.
Founded in 2021, Destination Dental School was conceived by former UB dental student and Buffalo native Arian Johnson, who encountered difficulties applying to dental school. Johnson is now a practicing dentist in Tennessee.
The program was named a recipient of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine’s 2022 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award.
