Shirley (nee Kreger) Luther, age 98, of Grand Island, died Nov. 18, 2022.
She was Grand Island School secretary to the superintendent, and school district clerk. She was editor of the "Islander” from 1942-45, and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, and to Save Historic Trinity Church; president of the Grand Island Memorial Library; director of the Neighbors Foundation; and a member of the Preservation Advisory Board and the Historical Society.
Shirley was Citizen of the Year for Education in 1985, and founder of the town supervisor collection in the Town Hall in 1981. She was also cochair of the Veterans Wall Memorial.
The beloved wife of the late LaVerne "Bunny" Luther, Shirley was the loving mother of Nancy (late Richard) Sandford, Gail (late William) Click, Carol (late Charles) Dunworth and the late Cpl. Robert B. Luther; and grandmother of Kelly Mongold, the late Robert (survived by wife Angela) Click, William (Danielle) Click, Michael (Beth) Sandford, Benjamin (Jillian) Hoover, Justin (Michele) Hoover, and Darcy (Steve) Lamb. She is survived by 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Shirley was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Mabel (nee Long) Kreger; and sister of the late Ralph and Joan Kreger.
Friends may call from 1-3 and 5-8 p.m. Friday at the Kaiser Funeral Home, 1950 Whitehaven Road, Grand Island. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church, 2100 Whitehaven Road, Grand Island.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Buffalo or the SPCA.
