NCSO: Industrial accident in Wheatfield

On Wednesday, just before 2 a.m., the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call regarding a hazardous material incident at the Avantor building in the Town of Wheatfield. The caller reported a spill of approximately 400 gallons of methanol contained inside the building.

The scene was quickly secured by a joint command of Bergholz Volunteer Fire Co., Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station and the Niagara County Fire Coordinator’s Office. Resources responded from the above agencies, along with the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office, Niagara County Hazardous Materials Team, Sanborn Volunteer Fire Co. and Tri-Community Ambulance Service.

Three employees were transported by Tri-Community Ambulance to Mount St. Mary’s Hospital for evaluation and precautionary decontamination.

NCSO said the scene was stabilized, without further exposure to responding personnel or the surrounding area. It stated there are no environmental or personal health risks to the surrounding businesses or residents at this time.

Further investigation into the industrial accident is ongoing.
