Grand Island Town Board sets May public hearings

The Grand Island Town Board set a number of public hearings for upcoming meetings at its April 18 Grand Island Town Board meeting. These include public hearings on preliminary plat approvals for five sections of the Southpointe development, which is bordered by Staley Road to the north, Love Road to the south, Baseline Road to the west and the I-190/South State Parkway to the east on Grand Island. When complete, the development will consist of 555 housing units, including single-family homes, townhouses, assisted living units, and mid-rise apartment buildings. On May 16, public hearing topics will include special use permits for Back Hills Farm Corp. to permit sheep to graze on solar sites on Industrial Drive and Bedell Road.

Both the Grand Island Parks Department and the Highway Department need seasonal employees, Councilman Tom Digati said at Monday’s Town Board meeting. He encouraged anyone interested in seasonal work to download and fill out a job application, which is available at the Town of Grand Island’s website (https://cms5.revize.com/revize/grandislandny/Departments/Parks/Application%20for%20Employment-%20GI%20Parks%20Department%202018.pdf).

Digati also mentioned the all-Island “Clean UP,” which will take place from 8 a.m. to noon April 23.

Town Councilman Christian Bahleda mentioned the Lions Club spaghetti dinner is scheduled for 5-8 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus. It is a takeout only event.

Councilman Pete Marston reminded people to be prepared for muddy conditions at the Arbor Day events, which will include two trail walks and a presentation on the town’s recently completed tree inventory, scheduled for 10 a.m. to about 2 p.m. at the Nike Base. In addition, the Town Board recognized Arbor Day with a proclamation.

Also, the Grand Island Town Board approved requests for use of the gazebo for two town organizations: the East Park Garden Club’s plant sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 21, and the Zonta Club’s mum sale in September.

The Town Board also approved the Zonta Club’s request to hold its Ten Days of Service Recognition Bows event, scheduled for Nov. 23 to Dec. 1.
