Friends of the late Dorothy Bitner held a memorial service on March 18 at the Bible Fellowship Center in her honor.
A long-time prominent figure on Grand Island, Bitner was a veteran of World War II who was discharged in September 1945 from the U.S. Army WAC Reserves. She was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary since 1973 as a flotilla commandeer.
Bitner cofounded the Grand Island Traffic Safety Board 35 years ago and continued to serve as a volunteer with the Island’s Community Emergency Response Team. She also chaired the Traffic Safety Board on Grand Island for many years.
Bitner passed away on Feb. 9, 2022.
