Tops says it “is committed to eradicating hunger in its local communities, and is proud to support its partners every year by running annual campaigns like ‘Check Out Hunger’ and ‘Food 2’ and ‘Food for Families’ campaigns.” It announced these campaigns recently were able to raise more than 2.5 million meals, “thanks to the generosity of the community.”

These campaigns help the community support food banks in their own backyards, including FeedMore WNY, Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania, Foodlink, Food Bank of Central New York, Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Food Bank of the Southern Tier, Food Bank of Northeastern New York, Vermont Food Bank, and Food Bank of the Hudson Valley.

A press release said, “This significant contribution continues to impact hundreds of thousands of families across Tops’ three state footprint as donations continue to be delivered to local food banks.”

FeedMore WNY President and CEO Tara A. Ellis said, “Thanks to the continued support of Tops Friendly Markets and its generous customers, FeedMore WNY is able to provide nutritious meals to hungry Western New Yorkers of all ages. For more than three decades, Tops Friendly Markets has been our partner in hunger relief. Through events like ‘Food 2 Families’ and ‘Check Out Hunger,’ Tops provides year-round support to FeedMore WNY, ensuring families in need are able to have food on the table.”

The press release cited the US Department of Agriculture and said more than 38 million people – including over 11 million children – experienced food insecurity in 2020, with no signs of that number decreasing. “As a matter of fact, many of the participating food banks that will benefit from these programs have indicated that the need is up more than 40%.”

Based in Williamsville, Tops Markets currently operates 150 grocery stores in New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont, including five that are run by franchisees. For more information, visit www.topsmarkets.com.
