More Lewiston events on tap for 2022

Trustees in the Village of Lewiston approved two summer events, and provided details on a spring dedication ceremony, at their monthly meeting on Monday.

•The board approved a request made by the Niagara Wine Trail to host the Niagara Wine Trail Festival from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday, July 23, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 24, at Academy Park. In addition to tastings, wineries will sell bottles and single servings of wine. The latter will be contained within the park, as per the open container law.

Festivalgoers, ages 21 and over, can purchase tickets online, and then receive a wristband for entry upon arriving at the venue.

•Also approved was a request made by the YMCA of Buffalo Niagara to host fitness classes at Academy Park. The outdoor sessions are slated to take place between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sundays from June 5 to Aug. 28.

With the Lewiston Artisan Farmers Market returning on Saturday mornings (June 4 through Oct. 15), Lewiston bicentennial events (July 4^th weekend) and the Peach Festival (September) also happening here, it’s shaping up to be a busy summer at Academy Park.

The Peace Garden Poem

Mayor Anne Welch said final plans are in the works for a rededication of poet Robert Giannetti’s work, “The Peace Garden.” Metal artist Dan Buttery is crafting a replacement marker.

“We’ve had several meetings to make sure everything that Bob wanted we worked out with him. Dan did a terrific job on this – they’re both very happy with it – and I just want to get everybody’s approval, so Dan can move forward with it.

“We would like to have a dedication on May 1.”

Giannetti first presented the poem in June 2010, when the Center Street site in between the “Yellow Houses” was renamed the International Peace Garden. It was encapsulated in wood, but that marker suffered weather wear and tear over the years.

The Village of Lewiston agreed to replace the poem plaque.

DPW Reminder on Permitted Trash

Department of Public Works Superintendent Larry Wills reminded residents, “We’re right around the corner from spring cleanup at your house. So, leaves and grass need to be bagged and put out on your regular garbage day.

“For large pickup, first working Monday of the month, each month. Brush, metal and demolition is to be separated in the front of your house, so we can pick it up.

“If you have any contractors doing any work at your house at all, the contractor is responsible to dispose of any waste”

Welch added, “The first full week in May will be our May cleanup week.”
