At 5:30 a.m. Sunday, March 20, the Niagara County Communications Center received 911 calls reporting a vehicle on fire, north of the intersection of Upper Mountain Road and Shawnee Road. It was reported the vehicle was occupied by one male driver, later identified as a Lockport resident. The callers were reported to have made unsuccessful attempts to remove the person from the vehicle, due to the vehicle being damaged from the crash.

Responding patrols from the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office arrived on location, broke widows and pulled the individual from the burning vehicle. The male was moved to safety, prior to the vehicle becoming fully engulfed in flames. He was evaluated by EMS personnel from Tri-Community Ambulance and taken to Erie County Medical Center to access for possible injuries.

Pekin Fire Co. responded and extinguished the fire. The initial investigation revealed the vehicle was traveling northbound on Shawnee Road and failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Upper Mountain Road. The vehicle went airborne approximately 30 feet, over a ditch, struck a tree, then traveled approximately 200 yards before fully stopping.

The driver allegedly displayed multiple signs of intoxication and was charged with driving while intoxicated, failure to stop at a stop sign and multiple other vehicle and traffic violations. He was given a future court date in the Town of Cambria. This individual is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
