Race participants for the 126th annual YMCA “Turkey Trot” will begin picking up their race-day packets Monday, Nov. 22, at the Independent Health Family Branch YMCA located at 150 Tech Drive, Amherst, ahead of the race on Thanksgiving morning.

Those participating in the annual tradition can pick up their packets daily between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. through Wednesday, Nov. 24. It is strongly recommended that packets are picked up prior to race day. Any person who does not pick up their packet ahead of the race can pick theirs up on Thanksgiving Day between 7 and 8:30 a.m. at the Delaware Family YMCA.

The YMCA “Turkey Trot” is a Thanksgiving Day tradition that attracts runners of all ages and abilities to Buffalo each year. Participants travel an 8K course that begins on Delaware Avenue in North Buffalo and finishes downtown near the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center. Organizers said, “Proceeds raised support YMCA Buffalo Niagara programs that empower youth, improve community health, and ensure access for all.”

Packets will include a race bib, commemorative T-shirt, and other materials. Race participants over the age of 21 will also receive a wristband that will grant access to the post-race party at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center. Anyone planning to attend the Convention Center party must show their wristband and be wearing a mask to gain entry, and ID is required to consume alcohol. There are no exceptions. Race organizers highly recommend any runner who plans to participate in the post-race party carry their ID, wristband and mask with them during the race.

A press release stated, “YMCA ‘Turkey Trot’ race organizers' No. 1 priority is to provide a safe and fun experience for everyone, and are counting on all involved to adhere to local, state and federal COVID-19 guidelines to ensure the continuance of this annual Thanksgiving Day tradition.”
