First Student to award $1,000 scholarships for top fundraising ‘king and queen’

Special Olympics New York has opened student registration for its first “Cool School Polar Plunge,” an entire day dedicated to Western New York students who commit to raising funds for local Special Olympics athletes by plunging into the cold water at Woodlawn Beach State Park on Friday, Dec. 3. First Student will award $1,000 scholarships to the top male and female fundraisers, who will also be crowned “king and queen” at the event.

School teams can register at www.PolarPlungeNY.org/Buffalo.

This year marks the 15th annual Buffalo Polar Plunge, which is scheduled for Dec. 4 at the same location. The Polar Plunge is one of the most popular and exciting fundraisers hosted by Special Olympics New York in the Western New York region. Participants raise money by asking friends, family, colleagues and acquaintances for donations.

“Polar plunges are some of the most valuable – and fun – events we host each year,” said Special Olympics New York President and CEO Stacey Hengsterman. “They’re an excellent opportunity for people from throughout the community to come together and support our athletes while also raising awareness about the abilities of people with intellectual differences. If you join us for a Polar Plunge, you’ll see why so many people return year after year.”

For more information about the event or assistance with registration, contact Erica Raepple at [email protected] or 716-909-6444.

Special Olympics New York is the largest state chapter in the country, serving more than 51,000 registered athletes and unified partners across New York with year-round sports training, athletic competition, and health screenings. The organization also partners with about 250 schools statewide to offer Unified Sports, where students with and without disabilities compete as teammates. All Special Olympics New York programs are offered at no cost to athletes, their families or caregivers. The organization has earned the Platinum Seal of Transparency from GuideStar.com.
